Welcome to Hard Candy students’ project.

Hard Candy is a one act play written by Jonathan Rand, a young playwright from New York. The play has been produced over 1110 times all over the world, and this is the first production in Prague. The actors are all students at the Department of English Language and Literature at the Charles University who are training to become English teachers and who are taking the course “Drama in the English classroom”. The course is taught by Bara Dockalova, the founder of the Jeviste language school, who has written and produced a number of plays with foreign language learners, both in the Czech Republic and abroad, and who has created her own original method of using drama and theatre techniques in teaching foreign languages – www.actandspeak.com.

The course “Drama in the English Classroom” is an optional course for 2nd year students, and it takes place once a week in the period of two semesters. In the winter semester, the course focuses on drama and theatre techniques that can be used in a regular English class at any type of school. In the second semester, the course takes the form of a play production process, with the focus on the students’ acting and directing skills. By going through the process themselves, the students can experience what effect such a project can have on the participants, and they will acquire the skills that are necessary to lead drama projects with their own future students.
